Over the past few years, students have been working hard to make Yardleys a more sustainable school. There are two whole school events held each year; Green Week where pupils receive lessons on a green theme across all subject areas held in June and the Eco - fair held at the end of the school year. Recently, the Eco council have launched the 10:10 campaign where we aim to reduce the carbon emissions of the school by 10% by the end of 2010. We have had two important visitors in the past year; Lord Hunt the Minister for Sustainability visited the school in June to look at pupils' work and hold a Q&A session with the Eco council. In September, John Prescott delivered his New Earth Deal presentation to the Eco council and members of year 10 and 11. Pupils across years 7,8,9 and 11 have taken part in a half term of Citizenship lessons learning about the upcoming UN Climate Change Summit in Copenhagen December 7th - 18th. Pupils took part in a mock summit on Thursday 12th Nov and were invited to have their voices heard by Lord Hunt. The messages were taken to the Houses of Lords on 23rd November when the Eco council had a private meeting with Lord Hunt. Last year, we were awarded Birmingham City Councils Basic 21 award for sustainability and went to an award ceremony at the Town Hall with the Mayor. We also were awarded the Litter Charter Award. The Eco council are also working hard towards getting the Eco schools prestigious Green Flag award. February saw the launch of the 10:10 campaign aiming to reduce our schools carbon emissions by 10% in one year.
